Chapter 18: More Magic

The days that followed fell into a new routine for Evan and me. In the morning, we practiced meditation and went about our day as usual. We dedicated the evenings to learning about magic and the community and how to control our powers. Sofia was fond of telling us, “Witches have an obligation to help and protect mundanes with our powers, and we can only do that if we pay attention and step in before things get extremely bad.” I knew it was her way of encouraging me to work harder, but it increased the pressure when I failed.

On one occasion, she was instructing me on starting fires. We were in the backyard, and Evan had moved the fire pit off the patio and away from the house.

“Just in case,” he said.

Sofia and I stood on opposite sides of the fire pit. In a quiet voice, she guided me through the same process, only this time said to pull on a single thread.

“See the red power that dances around the other ones? Gently direct a small sliver of it to pull away, and, in your mind’s eye, see it flow from you into the wood.”

I remembered to keep my breathing even and did as she directed. Heat sparked on my palm, and with a whoosh, the fire flared to life in the fire pit.

Evan took a step back. “Whoa! That was more than a small sliver. And that is why I moved the fire pit.”

“Actually, it was a small sliver, thank you very much,” I snapped.

“Was it?” Sofia asked quietly. “What would you compare it to if you could physically see it?”

“I think it would be like a coffee straw.”

“Hmm. Okay, so next time, let’s go smaller. Perhaps the size of a fingernail clipping.” Sofia clapped her hands. “But that’s all for today. Any questions?”

“Yes. When you shielded me the day Donna interrupted, why didn’t my magic hurt me? It was stuck inside a bubble with me. Shouldn’t I have felt something?” I asked.

“It won’t harm you, as it came from you, but it can definitely harm others. As it reminds you every time you go by Donna’s house.” She smiled to take the sting out of her words.

“The sheriff put it down to kids playing with firecrackers, thankfully,” Evan said. “He must have told Dave since there was a captioned picture in the paper this morning.”

“Did he? That was thoughtful of him. Usually, Dennis pleads ignorance until something else happens to take people’s minds off an incident.” Sofia picked up her purse.

“Wait, are you saying Sheriff Linden knows about witches?” I asked.

“Of course. His wife is one. She has a way with animals.”

I grabbed her hand. “Who else knows? Sofia, who else knows and covers it up? How did we not find out before? We grew up here.”

“You will find that lots of people know, and quite a few enjoy a little magic themselves. It’s not my place to reveal them. But I wanted you to know about Dennis, so you aren’t afraid of using your magic once you are able to control it.
